Q: Tell us briefly about your background and how you started making art.

Jean: I have no formal art training, but I have always loved painting. It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

Q: Was there a defining moment when you decided to pursue art seriously?

Jean: Yes, in 2012, I attended a three-day workshop with a local watercolour artist named Peter Dolbear. He inspired me to paint freely, and since then, I haven’t looked back.

Q: What media do you work with and why?

Q: Describe your typical creative process from idea to finished piece.

Jean: I often work plein air when possible, but I also create much of my work from my own photographs. My planning is very brief; after that, I let my creativity flow spontaneously.

Q: How do you know when a work is finished?

Jean: A painting feels finished when I find myself unsure of what to paint next. That’s usually my signal.

Q: Where do you find inspiration for your subject matter and themes?

Jean: Inspiration can come from anywhere, but I am particularly drawn to bold patterns of light, especially in reflections.

Q: Which artists or movements have influenced your work most?

Jean: I would say the Impressionists have had the greatest impact on my style and approach, particularly their use of colour and brushwork.

Q: How does your environment shape what you make?

Jean: My environment plays a crucial role in my work. Everything I see influences my paintings, and I’m constantly looking at other artists' work for inspiration.

Q: What techniques or tools are essential to your practice?

Jean: I use a variety of tools, primarily brushes and palette knives. I also like to use my fingers, pastel shapers, and cloths to create different textures.

Q: How do you choose which works to exhibit or sell?

Jean: I simply select the works I like best. It’s important to me that the pieces I exhibit resonate with my artistic vision.

Jean: I recommend grouping paintings according to subject or colours; it creates a cohesive display that elevates the viewer’s experience.
