Sketch Along Event

The Society hosted a demonstration on Monday, where Paul Oakley and Jean Perrett provided instruction on creating quick sketches to capture tonal values before painting. Paul discussed techniques for drawing winter landscapes, using projected images for guidance. Jean introduced her approach to sketch planning, utilising the Japanese ‘notan’ technique, a term that literally means “light-dark harmony”, exploring different arrangements of light and dark elements in a painting without having the distraction of other elements like colour, texture, and finer details. Both presentations were well-received, with members sketching along applying the demonstrated methods.

Following a coffee break, members showcased recent artwork. Attendees then voted for their favourite piece, awarding a £50 Walter Rose’s voucher to Nicola Elliott.
